Clinic - The concept of The WIND Youth Sailing Clinic, as envisioned by the board of The Sailing Foundation, was to bring a level of training excellence to the Pacific Northwest so that local youth sailors could get exposure to high level coaching in an intensity-rich environment. Many venues were reviewed, but as always in this sport, it came down to one thing... wind.

We chose Cascade Locks, Oregon, for several reasons. One of our key sponsors, The Columbia Gorge Racing Association, has a small facility there able to accommodate an event like this. Wright Watoaka, Sailing Foundation board member and instructor for Mt Baker rowing and sailing, was also very familiar with the waters of the area and knew the conditions would be suitable for a high level clinic. WIND Clinic Coordinator, Jan Visser, scouted out the area 6 months prior to the event, and saw that this location would fill the bill. History was made with the First Annual 2005 WIND Youth Sailing Clinic.

The event started with basic orientation, introduction of volunteers and coaches, and a few words from U.S. Sailing President Janet Baxter. The clinic quickly made its way to the water, as sailors added final touches to rigging and boat setup. With breezes reaching the mid 20's, sailors were getting a taste of what "The Gorge" has to offer. Because the wind is usually westerly in the summer and the Columbia river flows east to west, sailing upwind is a chore in the breeze but is quick because of the positive flow of the river. Downwind, you're sailing against a strong current.

Four days of great weather and solid breeze is what the clinic promised, and that is exactly what it delivered. The sailing was so great in fact that, after an entire day on the water, the Orcas Island Team would go out on their 29er's after the evenings meal and sail until the sun set, every night of the clinic. What an inspiration!

The Sailing Foundation - The Sailing Foundation is the title sponsor and originator of the WIND Youth Sailing Clinic. The Sailing Foundation is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of sail boating in the Pacific Northwest, with primary emphasis towards youth programs and safety. WIND 2006 - With the great success of WIND 2005 and great reviews from sailors and parents, it was quite apparent that this clinic should not just be an single event, but an enduring institution. WIND 2006 will be held on July 19 - 21 at Cascade Locks. WIND has also been added to the Northwest Youth Racing Circuit. Our format will change slightly with the clinic happening during the week and the Regatta happening on the weekend. We were honored to be invited into the NWYRC and look forward a regatta with WIND!
