SAS Committee Comment Stream
Following is a compilation of comments from SAS Committee Members relating to various materials posted on the Committee Webpage. To add a comment, please include it in a note to Tad Lhamon, who will forward it to the webmaster for publication.

Here is a copy of my PowerPoint slideshow from last year, edited and saved as a .ppt file (PowerPoint 97-2003 format). Some editing capabilities were lost in saving in the older file format but it should allow everyone to open and review the slides. Given the size of the file I suggest you put it up on the site and publish a link.
I would also pass along these thoughts to the others as they review:
1. I made no attempt to convey all necessary information in the slides, assuming that personal anecdotes, video and printed materials would also be used. They were intended as a guide for the trainer.
2. I would have liked to have better photos and graphics. The photos of the recovery were not always clear as to what was happening. I used the old graphics of the Quickstop, but would suggest a new version based on a simple animation with a sound track. The same kind of animation could be done for the Offshore/downwind recovery (which uses graphics I created).
3. The best training usually combines lecture, multimedia, demonstration and hands-on experience. We shouldn’t settle for just a show-and-tell unless there is no possible way to get the trainee physically involved.
4. I think the section on offshore/ downwind recoveries is important to add but this is just my own thinking and everyone should consider such a section carefully based on their own experience, and then we should test our recommendations.
5. The sections on Staying Attached, Hypothermia, and Search Techniques are progressively off topic, but I think they are both important and useful and could be the basis of optional instruction materials. In the Search Techniques I did not go into PLBs and other electronic aids but they should probably be mentioned if the topic were to be addressed.

Craig's slides 1-47 cover basic lifesling training and we should focus our initial attention here. Remaining slides cover jacklines, harnesses, hypothermia, suddenly alone, search options and patterns, and Craig's specific SIYC program—which could be incorporated into a variety of training programs after basic lifesling training is accomplished.
I'd suggest we read his slides against the older existing texts (see web site: original text, US Sailing Running a Lifesling Clinic) to come up with suggestions, changes
Hopefully each committee member will add personal observations, comments, experiences
Text should include a Common Mistakes section

Tad,
Here’s some information on helicopters and videographers from Carol Reid who is a friend of mine who works in marketing over at Kvickak Marine.

From Ryan to Carol Reid:
Can you tell me who you guys used for the helicopter footage that gave you such a reasonable rate? We’re working on revamping some Lifesling training materials for the Sailing Foundation and may consider doing aerial footage.
From Carol to Ryan:
I have attached Jen’s rate sheet. We pay for the helicopter which is $270 for the hour. We also pay for the rental of the 300mm f3.5-5.6L lens from Glazer’s Camera. She does a nice job and her rate is much better than Neil’s!!
From Ryan to Carol:
Do you know who runs the helicopter? Any way we can get in touch with them directly? We’re also looking for someone who does video if you know anyone.
From Carol to Ryan:
The helicopter company is Helicopters Northwest 206-767-0508 (it looks like the name on the invoice is Rob Thomas?)
You might want to contact the pilot for King 5 about a good video guy. His name is Mark Hansen. Cell (206) 604-0505 or email: mhansen@king5.com
Another contact I have is a guy who just sent his info to me. I don’t have any idea what he charges.

I am not really sure of his rate either.
You might want to ask Jen if she has done video before.
