Coaches' Clinic - 2011
On January 29th, the Sailing Foundation hosted its fourth annual Coaches' Clinic for Northwest Youth Racing Programs. Over fifty coaches and program leaders attended, representing high school sailing teams, college sailing teams and yacht club programs in Washington and Oregon. John Vandemoer, head coach of sailing at Stanford University, was this year's guest expert coach. John, whose team has consistently been at the top in national intercollegiate championships, spoke on three topics: how to teach sailors to "Speak Dinghy" - that is, how to communicate with a dinghy by how you move, to keep it at top speed and in full control; how to build a cohesvie team; and how to build a play book for team racing. In addition, Burke Thomas, leader of the Northwest High School conference, and Ben Glass, leader of the Northwest Youth Circuit Regattas, led a brainstorming session on improving opportunities for youth to race in the Northwest, and Kyle Eaton and Dave Cannard led a session on new laws and medical innovations relating to concussion.
