SAFETY AT SEA SEMINAR

The Sailing Foundation is hosting a US Sailing-sanctioned two-day
seminar on safe boating practices and safety equipment at the South
Lake Union Armory in Seattle on February 27 & 28, 2010. The seminar,
designed and conducted by nationally recognized sailors, will provide
novice and experienced boaters with information and skills for boat
preparation, handling heavy weather, recommended safety equipment,
emergencies at sea, and preparing for sailing off-shore. The program
is open to cruising and racing skippers, crew and family, recreational
power boaters, and commercial fishermen. Visit The Sailing Foundation
website for more information.=20

TEAM RACING 2009

Our 2009 Sailing Foundation Coaches Clinic developed new areas for
local sailors by extending invitations beyond junior program, high
school and college sailing team coaches to include representatives of
the major one-design fleets in the area. (Read more about the 2009
Coaches Clinic at
http://cts.vresp.com/c/?TheSailingFoundation/abe45d3839/2f6ed101b9/251fca2a=
f2

Representatives from the Seattle J-24, 505, and Thistle fleets
attended the clinic, generating excitement within the local fleets to
spice things up by introducing team racing to fellow fleet members.=20
Rusty Lhamon, a former college sailor at Stanford University,
representing the Thistle fleet, was motivated to action through this
re-introduction to team racing. Having done a lot of team racing in
college, Rusty was eager to try the "new" digital 'N' course, opening
up a whole new set of team tactics introduced by clinic leader Steve
Hunt.

Working with Sailing Foundation Board member and fellow Thistle fleet
member Joe Burcar, Lhamon and Burcar purchased one of Steve Hunt's
DVDs ("Teaching Team Racing 2008") and put together a plan to
introduce team racing through a series of three (free) lectures,
leading to bi-weekly on-the-water practices at Sail Sandpoint.	The
program was run through Corinthian Yacht Club (CYC) of Seattle, but
was open to anyone who was interested, regardless of yacht club or
fleet affiliation. To read more about the 2009 CYC team racing
program, visit

THISTLE GPS UNITS

In late 2008, the Seattle Thistle fleet received an anonymous donation
that could only be accepted if processed through a non-profit
501(c)(3) organization. The problem was that neither the Thistle
fleet nor the fleet's host club (Corinthian Yacht Club of Seattle) had
501(c)(3) status. The Sailing Foundation was able to step in and help
the fleet accept the donation. (Read more about the Sailing
Foundation's support for Youth Sailing at
http://cts.vresp.com/c/?TheSailingFoundation/abe45d3839/2f6ed101b9/749cc0e1=
e0

The fleet had a plan for how to best use the donation by purchasing
hand held GPS units to gather individual boats' "tracks" during weekly
fleet races, which could then be uploaded to the Kattack website,
where fleet members could view the races, creating an incredible
learning experience. Read more about the Seattle Thistle fleet's use
of the GPS units at:
http://cts.vresp.com/c/?TheSailingFoundation/abe45d3839/2f6ed101b9/3eae8db1=
0d.

Seattle Thistle fleet member Doug Strumberger has written a great
post-race description of using the Kattack system during a Spring 2009
race that can be viewed at:
